alive and well in Downtown Havana, Cuba
Yip made it to Cuba last night and so far am loving the place, real cool feel to it and not a sign of any "normal" commercial shop frontage etc (well normal as we know it) And sowy Muscles def no Maccy Ds in sight!
Twas sad leaving the luxury we had in Ocho Rios in Jamaica (pool, beach and all mod cons etc) but then were far away hills to check out
The flight over was without drama with the highlight being the complimentary Champers! (god bless Air Jamaica mon).
Decisions had to be made on arrival re accommodation etc (as u may know Cuba being Communist is strict on details of keeping tabs on u!) Anyway we decided to bluff them and pretended to be staying at some hotel (picked from Guide Book), it worked anyway to a point as we got thru Immigration etc, but trouble brewed the other side as there seemed to be little hotels on offer (oh did I mention it was 11:30 at night!) and the cheapest they would offer us was double for $80 - way over our budget
Took and chance and I babbled away to a few different people in Spanish and eventually one guy came up trumps and after some detailed discussion (!) we agreed on a room in someones house for $25 (for room). Renting rooms in houses is normal practice here by the way
No probs with the taxi straight to the door and we made our introductions with the family and found out what a cool house we landed, picture real old style colonial house (im talking 15-18ft high doors and ceilings another 5ft above that, open windows half way up the walls and mini court yard on the way to the banos (oh and the shower has "kinda warm" weather which is a bonus on our budget.
Think thats enough for one blog, ! Just to mention that spent the day rambling around the streets which felt perfectly safe, regardless of what guide book say. Tune in tomorrow for descriptions of what to be seen - actually would think u have stepped back in time about 40yrs!!
Over and out
